Building a Personal Brand in Web3: Lessons from the Trenches

Karnika E. Yashwant speaking about Web3 branding

The Web3 space moves fast. Projects launch and fade within weeks, market cycles swing wildly, and the noise-to-signal ratio on social media is staggering. In this environment, a strong personal brand is not a luxury – it is your most durable competitive advantage.

I have been building in this space since 2013, long before “Web3” was even a term. Through bull runs and bear markets, through ICO mania and DeFi summer, through NFT hype and AI convergence, one thing has remained constant: the founders and operators who invested in their personal brand weathered every storm better than those who did not.

Why Personal Branding Matters More in Web3

In traditional industries, your company brand does the heavy lifting. In Web3, people follow people. The pseudonymous, trust-scarce nature of the space means that a recognizable, credible personal brand becomes your primary trust signal. When I speak at events from Dubai to Tokyo, the conversations that lead to real partnerships almost always start with someone saying they have been following my work – not that they found KEY Difference through a Google search.

This is the paradox of Web3 branding: in a space that celebrates decentralization and trustlessness, human trust and personal reputation have never been more important.

Three Principles That Actually Work

Consistency over virality. Everyone wants the viral tweet, the breakout thread, the clip that gets millions of views. But the founders I respect most – and the ones who build lasting influence – show up every single day. They share insights when the market is up and when it is down. They do not disappear during bear markets. Consistency compounds in ways that no single viral moment can match.

Depth over breadth. You do not need to have an opinion on everything. Pick your lanes – mine are marketing, blockchain infrastructure, and the business side of Web3 – and go deeper than anyone else. The market rewards specialists. When someone needs an expert voice on crypto PR or Web3 go-to-market strategy, I want them to think of me before anyone else. That only happens when you commit to depth.

Give before you ask. The most effective personal branding strategy I have ever used is simply sharing what I know, freely and generously. Every framework I publish, every case study I break down, every piece of advice I give at a conference creates a deposit in what I think of as a trust bank. When the time comes to promote a new venture or ask for a partnership, that trust bank pays dividends.

Building a personal brand in Web3 is a long game. But for founders who are serious about creating lasting impact – not just chasing the next cycle – it is the single best investment you can make.
